Developing Your Research Skills - CGC 1D1 Gathering and Organizing Information |
Research Skills:
Research skills refer to your ability to search for, locate, gather, record, organize, assess and communicate information on a specific topic. The focus of this activity is to gather, record and organize information.
Information Types:
● Quantitative Information
○ includes information that can be measured or counted or has a numerical value
○ Example: "The earthquake in Turkiye/Syria had a magnitude of 7.8."
● Qualitative Information
○ includes information that describes qualities or characteristics using descriptive words or text
○ Often describes processes (how), gives explanations (why) or makes connections
○ Example: "The earthquake in Turkiye/Syria occurred when the Arabian tectonic plate moved northward into the Eurasian plate, thereby squeezing the Anatolian plate westward. This created a transform plate movement along the East Anatolian fault line which resulted in the earthquake."
● GeoVisuals
○ Geographic data is often communicated using visual formats such as maps, diagrams or graphs
○ Maps present various geographical characteristics of a location
○ Diagrams often explain processes or describe connections
○ Graphs present all sorts of information
○ Example:
|
GeoVisual Summary Notes: ➔ The earthquake occurred in Turkiye, but impacted both Turkiye and Syria ➔ Cities like Gaziantep experienced severe shaking ➔ Approximately 13.5 million people in Turkey experienced the shaking ➔ Approximately 11 million people in Syria experienced the shaking |
Overall Inquiry Question:
Why is the Greenbelt important to Southern Ontario?
Specific Research Questions:
● What is Ontario's Greenbelt?
○ Describe the natural features of the Greenbelt:
■ Niagara escarpment
■ Oak Ridges moraine
■ Holland Marsh.
● Where is Ontario's Greenbelt located?
● How does Ontario's Greenbelt support water resources?
● How does Ontario's Greenbelt support ecosystems and biodiversity?
● How does Ontario's Greenbelt support people and the economy?
Steps:
● Read each source listed in the table below. Find information that answers each of the specific research questions.
● Copy and paste relevant information that answers the research questions into the table
● Each piece of information needs to start with a bullet
● Do you have facts/information to answer each research question?
● Highlight each piece of information based on which question it answers
● Use the highlight colours as seen above above
● If you are missing information to answer a research question, go back to Step 1 to gather and record information that answers that research question
● Do you have a variety of information types (quantitative, qualitative and geovisual information)?
● Identify the quantitative facts by changing the font to "Arial Black"
● Identify the qualitative information by changing the font to "Comic Sans MS"
● Include at least 2 GeoVisuals. For each visual summarize the key ideas from the visual in point-form notes
